GHYLL SCRAMBLING

Ghyll Scrambling provides the perfect adventure day for anyone - grab a wetsuit and scramble your way up some of the Lake District's most stunning Ghylls.

We offer a range of options to suit first timers with lots of sliding and splashing, to adrenaline-fuelled jumps and climbs.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Ghyll Scrambling - also known as Gorge Scrambling or Gorge Walking - is one of The Lake District's most popular outdoor activities.

Ghyll Scrambling is the perfect activity for groups small and large, from corporate team-building trips to stag & hen-dos, youth group outings to birthday parties and family fun days out.

Suitable for all experience levels - you'll climb, slide and jump your way up and down a selection of the best mountain ghylls The Lake District has to offer. There are plenty of fun obstacles including natural rock chutes, crystal-clear pools, and even the occasional waterfall!

Our Ghyll Scrambling tours run from April to October, however they are dependent on current water temperate and recent weather conditions.

We may be able to offer alternate routes if you've already completed the below options.

Get in touch to see what we can offer you.

An easy 15 minute walk up the hill from the carpark takes us to our starting point for Stoney Croft Ghyll.

From here we will take the path of most fun back down! We will slide, jump, swim, and scramble over a range of terrain, taking in the sights and enjoying ourselves on the way!

Spectators can walk alongside this ghyll. Suitable for those looking for a relaxed and fun 'out of the ordinary' day out.

STICKLE BARN GHYLL

Duration: Half Day Activity (3 hours)

Grade: Beginner/Intermediate

Cost: £50pp

Group size: 4-8 people

A short 5 minute walk up from the carpark takes us to the start of Stickle Barn Ghyll. From here we will travel upstream, climbing, jumping, scrambling and swimming.

We wear harnesses in this ghyll to provide support for short sections of climbing.

This is a great 'choose your level' gorge, with simple cut-arounds for the more challenging sections. Spectators can walk alongside this ghyll.

ESK GORGE

Duration: Full Day Activity (6 hours)

Grade: Advanced

Cost: £80pp

Group size: 3-6 people

Considered the biggest and most intense gorge scramble in the Lake District, Esk Gorge is not for the faint of heart! The gorge sources its water straight from the base of the tallest mountain in England, Scafell Pike.

A combination of beautiful isolated views and chillingly tall jumps, the Esk makes for a day never to be forgotten!

We suggest this ghyll for those with ghyll scrambling experience and a reasonable level of fitness. The approach consists of a one hour walk on a flat and well-trodden footpath to the end of the Eskdale valley.
