MOUNTAIN SKILLS

Whether working toward your next Mountain Qualification or just looking to learn a new skill in the mountains, our courses can be tailored to suit your needs and get you confident looking after yourself in the mountains. 

Mountain Skills Courses run year round.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Our Mountain Skills Courses are designed for  participants of all levels; from complete beginners looking to learn the basics and gain confidence in the mountains, to advanced skill progression for those completing mountain-based qualifications and beyond.

These courses are full day activities. They require a good level of fitness as you will be in the mountains for around 6 hours. The courses will run in most weather conditions. Please come prepared.

​

Locations will vary, as they will be chosen based on the groups requirements, and current conditions in the mountains. Private course bookings may request particular locations.​

​

Public Mountain Skills Courses have a minimum age of 12 years.

Younger children can be booked on a private course.

MOUNTAIN SKILLS COURSES

Duration: Full Day Activity (6 hours)

Grade: Beginner 

Cost: £80pp ​

Group size: 3-6 people

​

Our Public Level 1 Mountain Navigation course is designed for those who have little or no experience of navigating in the great outdoors. It is ideal for those who want a little more confidence to be able to follow footpaths and other features to get around walks in upland or lowland areas.

​

The course is practical and outdoors based in order to learn and practice skills in the environment they are designed to be used in.​​​

Duration: Full Day Activity (6-8 hours)

Grade: Beginner 

Cost: £280

Group size: 1-3 people

Our full day Introduction to Lake District Scrambling course aims to get you experiencing some classic Lake District routes in a safe, educational environment.

Grade: Intermediate/Advanced

Cost: £90 pp

Group size: 3-6 people

Our Public Level 2 Mountain Navigation course is designed for those who have completed Level 1 or equivalent training, and who want the skills, knowledge, and strategies to be able to navigate accurately across featureless terrain in poor visibility and conditions.

 

This course will take place mostly  off-trail in order to allow you to gain the confidence to navigate using the compass and contour features on the map.​

Cost: £240 up to 4 + £40pp

Group size: 1-6 people

Our private Mountain Skills course can be tailored entirely to your groups ability and aims and can be run across the Lake District. We will work with you to plan the perfect skills course.  â€‹

WHAT TO BRING

This list is mandatory year round. If you are missing any items please get in touch.

Arriving to a Mountain Skills Course without these items may result in you being turned away.

Your instructor will have all navigation equipment necessary. 

  • Walking boots (waterproof recommended) 

  • Clothing suitable for walking (no jeans) 

  • Rucksack (waterproof liner recommended) 

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers 

  • Warm layer, hat and gloves

  • Sun hat, sun glasses and sun cream 

  • Water bottle (minimum 1 litre)

  • Food (packed lunch and snacks) 

  • Head torch (charged)

  • Any personal medication including Epipens 

  • Personal equipment you'd like to practice with
